YouTube came out with an interesting stat and showed video watch times have increased over 400% in the last few years. Last year alone it doubled from 20 minutes to a whopping 40 minutes per day for viewers worldwide.
This means that more and more of your audience is preferring to watch than read. We’ve become a lazy society of convenience, speed and ADHD.
Laughable perhaps…but true! So how can you take advantage of this fact that video is king. Firstly, you can start by taking video every day in your practice for Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.
Here are a few tips you can use for professionally filming in your practice.
FILM TIME
It’s been discovered that viewers love short videos. Try to keep your videos under 2 minutes where possible, and definitely not over 5 or 6 minutes. How many times have you looked at the timer on Youtube, only to see 25 minutes or more…and you left.
When I started filming shorter training video content for JetPack membership vault, I saw an immediate increase in views from my members.
LIGHTING
Lighting is critical and I highly emplore that you use a soft box light to remove shadows from your face. If you follow my YouTube channel, you’ll often notice I vary my location from studio to inside the practice and natural lighting is just not enough. My favorite online site is www.bhphotovideo.com to purchase your equipment.
EDITING
I love my Mac, which comes with i-movie for editing. Camtasia is also a favorite, which is available for both Mac and PC. Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro are also great professional choices.
THE FRAME
Try to take a bust shot where possible. This is the frame that touches the bottom of your abdomen to one fist height above your head. This is a technique I learned from Mike Filsaime and Andy Jenkins, who created WebinarJam.
THE CAMERA
You don’t need to spend a lot of money on a professional camera. Two things to look for: one, that it’s HD quality and can film in 1080. There should also be an external audio input for your lavalier. Inexpensive Canon Vixia HD cameras can be purchased at Best Buy or BHPhotoVideo.com. My favorite is the Canon G40, which has a built-in Wi-Fi. Alternatively, if you don’t want to purchase a camera, you can film off your smart phone, but the audio will suffer at distances over 8 feet.
AUDIO
This is such an important and critical part of filming that people often neglect.
My favorite lavalier is the Sony UWP-D11 transmitter and receiver. The audio is crisp and clear…but you will go through “AA” batteries quickly. You can film at a distance from your camera with your transmitter. I hook up my Receiver right to my camera on my tripod.
SCRIPTING
Yes, I’m busted! But many of my videos are somewhat, but not always scripted. My favorite technique is to “chunk” concepts in a black marker on a piece of paper and tape it to my tripod or in the past, I’ve used a teleprompter app on my iPad. I review the flow of the video first off my script and then film. This allows my video to sound smooth, avoiding as many “Ahs” and “Ums” where possible.
If you find that you’re tripping on your sentences, nervous during filming or just can’t put two words together, try a glass of wine prior to shooting. That’s from experience!
SMILE
An editing tip is to smile prior to filming. I know it sounds ridiculous, but you’ll also need about 3 seconds of lead-time during your editing. Your audience will read your body language and you don’t want to look stiff and boring. Have fun with your videos. I often will put bloopers at the end of my videos for giggles!
CONSISTENCY
This is key for 2 reasons. The new A.I. incorporated in voice recognition, uses a lot of key words for your ranking. I do recommend that you learn what your key list of SEO Keywords are for your practice and sprinkle those throughout your videos.
Secondly, you want to set time aside every week to film. Block off 1 to 2 hours, lock your doors, put your phones on hold and film every week. Consistency will help with your ranking and viewership. My good friend Chris Burfield films once per month on a Saturday and will film the entire month’s worth. That’s genius, because he hires a professional videographer who’ll edit and upload for him.
REPURPOSING
Your videos can be repurposed across multiple platforms. Here’s a simple formula what I recommend and one that we teach at our annual Ultimate Chiropractic Adventure Mastermind (www.ucam.fun)
- Facebook Live or camera
- Download to your desktop
- Upload to your YouTube channel
- Link within your weekly vlog or blog
- Repurpose on your Facebook newsfeed
- Repurpose for Instagram
- Create a social media ad
